the clarinet trio

liner notes by gebhard ullmann 2004

this is the third release of "the clarinet trio" introducing michael thieke on altoclarinet and clarinet who has been performing with us since 2002. as usual we recorded in the beautiful old chamber music hall of the rbb radio in berlin and i would like to thank ulf drechsel for his continuing suport.

this cd is performed as one long suite in different sections, moving through different musical areas we explored since 1998 but, more specifically, over the past two years.

there are certainly many different meanings to the term 'ballad' for this trio

let me talk a little bit about the time signatures that seem significant for many of the new compositions i wrote. "seven 9-8" uses 7 and 9 time signatures, later on top and shifting against each other, finally returning to 7/8, in "29 shoes" the b section is in 6/8, 8/8 and 9/8, "verschiedene annaeherungen ..." is a ballad in 6/4 and 5/4, "desert... bleue... east" uses 9/8, 11/8, 4/4, 5/4 and 7/4 time signatures and "déjà vu" comes in three different variations with all kinds of tempi and signatures plus a different tuning on "variation 2".

we have also continued the instant composition (i really like this icp-term) series that started with "collective no. 1" back in '98. here they called "collectives nos 9 - 12" using bits of something i called "lines.

finally this recording features two new and completely different arrangements of "almost twenty-eight" and "variations on a theme by claude debussy" (based on his composition "syrinx").

i would like to thank the musicicans and everyone else who have and continue to support this band-project over the years as i am a strong believer in long-lasting bands (or even more general 'art projects'). for me they are an essential part of developing a musical language and growing in all the different levels of musical and human/personal communication.

and, after all, this is what playing jazz is all about.
