"essencia" represents a new direction for me in several respects: after i had „instigated“ a number of different projects between brooklyn and berlin in recent years, this project originated in berlin (although it is suffused with the international travels and impressions of all three musicians), it is my first cd (since my co-operation with paul bley) to feature a piano, and it is – after the cd's "trad corrosion" (with andreas willers and phil haynes) and "clarinet trio" – my third cd in a series of varying trios.
when jens thomas entered the berlin scene, the duo in which we had met soon became a trio with carlos bica, who hails from portugal but is a long-standing resident of berlin. in addition to some typical „bica-compositions“ and my „gospel“, „essencia“ documents a number of „spontaneous compositions“.
the translation of a variety of musical idioms into a language of one‘s own (sombras e nevoeiro, gospel, haiku, walking poem no.2, essencia), the free improvisational approach to existing material, and – last but not least – the musicians' background as composers are three of the dominant features of this trio. added to this is our shared enjoyment of moods, associations, images and colours.
the inimitable acoustics of the old broadcasting hall of the sfb (radio berlin), where i had already recorded the „tá lam projects“, the cds „trad corrosion“ and „clarinet trio“, were ideally suited for this trio.

"essencia" bedeutet für mich in mehrerer hinsicht eine neue richtung: nachdem ich in den vergangenen jahren zwischen brooklyn und berlin eine reihe von verschiedenen projekten "anzettelte" ist dieses ein in berlin entstandenes projekt (das gleichwohl die weltweiten reisen und impressionen aller drei musiker "atmet"), es ist (seit meiner zusammenarbeit mit paul bley) die erste cd mit piano und es ist - nach den cd's "trad corrosion" (mit andreas willers und phil haynes) sowie "clarinet trio" - meine dritte cd in einer serie von unterschiedlichen trios.
als jens thomas auf der berliner szene erschien wurde bald aus dem duo, in dem wir uns kennenlernten ein trio mit carlos bica der, ursprünglich aus portugal, bereits seit längerer zeit in berlin lebt. neben einigen typischen "bica-kompositionen" und meinem "gospel" sind auf "essencia" eine reihe von "spontankompositionen" dokumentiert.
die übersetzung von verschiedenen musikidiomen in die eigene sprache (sombras e novoeiro, gospel, haiku, walking poem no.2, essencia), der freie improvisatorische umgang mit dem vorgegebenen material und nicht zuletzt der kompositorische background der interpreten sind drei der eckpfeiler dieses trios. dazu kommt unsere gemeinsame lust an stimmungen, assoziationen, bildern und farben.
der alte sendesaal des sfb (radio berlin), in dem ich bereits die "tá lam projekte", die cds "trad corrosion" sowie "clarinet trio" aufgenommen habe, war mit seiner speziellen akustik wie geschaffen für dieses trio.
