"German reeds great Gebhard Ullmann and NY-based trombone hero Steve Swell have played together in Basement Research, as well as co-leading this very quartet. This is the third disc from this group which includes a strong rhythm team with Hill Greene on bass and avant-jazz drum legend Barry Altschul, whose long career reaches back to the mid-sixties with Paul Bley and later with Sam Rivers.
The first tune is called "Improv/Box Set" and it is fine opener. The quartet have an intense, organic way of working together. The interplay between the trombone & bass clarinet and the bass & drums is extraordinary. Tight, circular waves spinning around one another powerfully ...
"Slammin' Textures", a long piece that moves through different sections, from a minimal bass clarinet & trombone duo which builds into a boisterous conclusion. You can tell that Gebhard & Steve have been playing together for quite a while since there is so much sympathetic communication going on between them throughout this dynamic disc. Another wonderful disc from the feisty folks at CIMPoL" (Bruce Gallanter, Downtown Music Gallery NYC, '9/'10)
