GULF of BERLIN ist ein Sextett aus fünf MusikerInnen und einem Echtzeit Sound Designer, das den Raum zwischen Improvisation und Komposition neu vermisst. Was auf den ersten Blick wie spontane Klangentfaltung wirkt, offenbart sich als Musik, die zwar im Moment entsteht, aber durch die besondere Anordnung innere Logik trägt.
Jede einzelne akustische Stimme wird mit elektronischer Bearbeitung in Echtzeit verwandelt und den MusikerInnen als Spiegel zurückgeführt, sodass das Ensemble wie ein vielstimmiges Kollektiv wirkt: jede(r) Musiker(in) reagiert auf ein verfremdetes Ich.

So entstehen Klanglandschaften, die von schwebenden Ambient-Texturen über eruptive Noise-Gebirge zu Rhythmen von Prog-Rock-Visionären reichen. Im Hintergrund schwingt die radikale Haltung der AACM mit, während die spirituelle Glut Albert Aylers aufflammt.

G.o.B. versteht seine Musik als Laboratorium: präzise, diszipliniert und zugleich offen für das Unvorhersehbare. Aus dieserm Spannungsfeld wächst eine Energie, die Komposition nicht als starres Gebilde, sondern als lebendigen Prozess begreift. Musik wird hier zum utopischen Raum, - ein offenes Terrain, in dem das Kollektiv neue Klangformen erfindet und Zukunft hörbar macht. Mit dieser eigenen Qualität überzeugte G.o.B. das legendäre New Yorker Free Jazz Label ESP-Disk' zur Veröffentlichung ihrer beiden Alben.

' Einzelne Songs herauszustellen, ist nicht erforderlich, denn ich empfinde die Ansammlung der zehn Stücke als Gesamtwerk. Ich versuche, mir ein Kunstwerk vorzustellen, sei es ein Gemälde oder eine Skulptur, vielleicht auch ein Kurzfilm. Jeder Song ist Teil dieses Werkes, und die Farben oder Formen werden geschaffen durch die jeweiligen Instrumente. Diese malen oder formen Teile des Ganzen und ich kann im Geiste mitmalen. Sehr interessant ist es, wenn sich wie bei "Serenade" mitten im Song swingende Passagen entwickeln, die allmählich mit einem drohnenhaften elektrischen Dauerton in eine Richtung schweben, die entweder an Tinnitus oder elektronische Klangexperimente der Sechziger erinnern.' ' Ob in dünner Luft auf dem 'K3' mit der Posaune als Himalayahorn in Noisegestöber und Beckenrausch, oder gegen den Strich gebürstet bei 'Joja Romp' in bebender Klangwolke und bepauktem, crashendem, pickendem Groove, die Electronics liften das von bloß jazziger in gewiefte Up-to-dateness. Und wenn Gschlössl bei 'Tellus' den Luftikus spielt, wühlt Leipnitz im Schrott, zupft Fink monoton zu tief- und hochtönender Bassklarinette. A lot of things merge in this city. GULF of Berlin give this special mix a name - they draw from the African-American sources of modern jazz tradition and let free play, energy, humour and a quantum of the indefinable collide. Their strict concept is one hundred percent improvised, the multi-faceted line-up keeps everything in suspense, only on the floor hard practized compositions hit the ground. This is great art - brought together with ease.

In Michael Haves, someone has now been found who, with the flair of a producer, refines the GULFstream in a lively and real-time manner. Without changing the compositional and playful flow, he adds an electronic aura and thus becomes the fifth element of the process.

Starting in 2023 Antje Messerschmidt joined the band on violin and viola.
And from 2024 Maike Hilbig plays the double bass in GULF of Berlin

The electro/acoustic Soundresearch Project - with analog live electronics by Berliner Michael Haves -
has been released online on ESP Disk in the fall of 2021 and as a physical CD in february 2022.


MUSICAL CONCEPT:

GULF of Berlin is a free improvising ensemble from Berlin. Originally coming from the avant-garde, free jazz and jazz tradition, the band has developed a specific sound including elements of contemporary classical music, prog rock from the 70's, noise,
electronic music. All based on melodic and rhythmic transparency.

Multi-instrumentation is a stylistic device.

In short: electro/acoustic composed improvisations and improvised compositions in the best sense of post-free jazz.
