ABOUT

The Hemisphere project is my latest electro/acoustic working unit - introducing my current genre- generation- and gender- crossing idea - and creates what I call 'listening movies' - 'Hörfilme'.
While the first CD was named 'Hemisphere 4' it comes in different sizes from duo to septet.
With myself returning to soprano, flutes, bass clarinet and electronics it combines new music, improvised compositions, composed music, improvised music plus a little bit of something else - and completes the circle to my works from the 1980's. 

The line-up will be any combinations of Gebhard Ullmann (ss, bfl, bcl, fx) with Silke Lange (acc) Anna Viechtl (concert harp, fx) Liz Kosack (keys) Taiko Saito (vib, percussion, bass drum, sound objects).

In 2026 I shall present the new addition 'Hemisphere 4 PLUS', adding Oliver Potratz on double bass and Eric Schaefer on small drum set to the above line up.
Hemisphere 4 PLUS will perform several concerts in Berlin and appear on the festival in Peitz.

' Das gibt es wirklich nicht häufig. Ein Album, das mit dem ersten Ton die Hörer:innen gefangennehmen kann und nicht mehr loslässt, bis es zu Ende ist. Gebhard Ullmann und seiner Klangreisecrew mit Liz Kosack, Silke Lange und Taiko Saito verstehen es, mit wenigen musikalischen Elementen eine musikalische Sphäre herzustellen, die irgendwie in einer ganz anderen Welt spielt. Rational-esoterisch wirkt das Ergebnis wie bei der vorsichtigen Erkundung eines musikalischen Kontinents. Bei diesem Quartett stößt man wirklich auf neues, bislang unerhörtes Terrain. Aber wird sicher dabei geführt.
Man lässt es fließen, man lässt die Dinge geschehen und lässt sie zu. Das hat diese klangliche Leichtigkeit und emotionale Schwere, die unergründlich, aber geerdet zu sein scheint. Was soll man da auch ergründen, wo alles wie von selbst sich fügt? Obwohl man hörend Neuland betritt, merkt man doch, dass es genau so und nicht anders sein muss.
Die Meisterschaft, wie sich das Quartett auch in mikrotonalen Gefilden bewegt und mit elektronischen Klängen umgeht innerhalb einer Welt der gelenkten Improvisation, ist schlechterdings überwältigend. Man darf sich hier einfach mal faszinieren lassen von so viel Ideenreichtum, der dabei immer durch seine Formung zum musikalischen Statement der schwebenden Selbstverständlichkeit ausreift. Beeindruckend! '

' Hemisphere 4 is, overall, an ambient album filled with expressive discourse and textural layers of sound. It manages to defy the unexpected in many ways, bringing the band-leader's enchanting and engrossing music to a somewhat more minimalistic musical form.
Performed across several parts, the music is beautifully connected, yet intelligently varied. Consistently brilliant, the often delicate nature of the music is interleaved with stunning ambient textures and some breathtaking soloing from Ullman.
It feels like a stream of consciousness finding its way from the music being performed into the listener's ears. It feels natural. It feels welcoming. And it is richly rewarding to my ears. '
